Lipids
Lipids are a class of organic compounds that are primarily composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. They are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol and ether. Lipids serve as a vital component of living cells and play numerous important roles in biological systems.
Functions of Lipids:
Lipids have various functions in the body, which are crucial for maintaining overall health and proper functioning of organs. Some of the key functions of lipids include:
1. Energy Storage: Lipids are an efficient form of energy storage in the body. They provide more than twice the energy per gram compared to carbohydrates and proteins, making them an essential fuel source during times of fasting or prolonged physical activity.
2. Structural Component: Lipids contribute to the structure and integrity of cell membranes. Phospholipids, a type of lipid, form a lipid bilayer that acts as a barrier between the cell and its external environment. Cholesterol, another type of lipid, helps regulate membrane fluidity and stability.
3. Insulation and Protection: Adipose tissue, a specialized form of connective tissue composed mainly of lipids, acts as an insulating layer in the body. It helps regulate body temperature and protects vital organs from mechanical shocks.
4. Hormone Production: Lipids play a crucial role in the production of hormones. Steroid hormones, such as cortisol and testosterone, are synthesized from cholesterol. These hormones are involved in various physiological processes, including metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
5. Absorption of Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Lipids facilitate the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) in the digestive system. These vitamins require the presence of lipids for proper absorption and utilization by the body.
Structure of Lipids:
Lipids are structurally diverse, but they all share the common characteristic of being hydrophobic or insoluble in water. The types of lipids can be categorized into different classes:
1. Fatty Acids: Fatty acids are the building blocks of most lipids. They consist of a long hydrocarbon chain with a carboxyl group (-COOH) at one end. Fatty acids can be saturated (no double bonds) or unsaturated (one or more double bonds).
2. Triglycerides: Triglycerides are the most abundant type of lipid in the body. They are composed of three fatty acids attached to a glycerol molecule. Triglycerides serve as a storage form of energy.
3. Phospholipids: Phospholipids are major components of cell membranes. They consist of two fatty acids, a phosphate group, and a glycerol molecule. The hydrophobic fatty acid tails face inward, while the hydrophilic phosphate head faces outward, forming a lipid bilayer.
4. Steroids: Steroids are lipids characterized by a four-ring structure. Cholesterol, a type of steroid, is an essential component of cell membranes and serves as a precursor for the synthesis of other steroids, including hormones.

Why are lipids important?
